Is Health Insurance Required?

In West Virginia, as in the rest of the United States, there is no longer a federal mandate requiring individuals to have health insurance. The individual mandate, which was a key part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), required most Americans to have health insurance or pay a penalty. However, this penalty was effectively eliminated starting in 2019 when it was reduced to $0 as part of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017.

As of now, West Virginia does not have a state-level individual mandate requiring residents to have health insurance.
